As the online meeting begins, put up instructions to all participants that they should scavenge three objects from anywhere in their home that match three particular criteria. Here’s some possible criteria you could use, but you can also make up more!
“Find an item which…
…best sums up your personality.
…you received as a present, and tell us about the person who gave it to you.
…sparks joy.
…has the most entertaining story behind it.
…comes from the furthest away.
…doesn’t belong to you, and tell us why you have it.
…is the most unusual.
…you’ve had for the longest.
…is the most unexpected or out of place.
…you think everyone ought to own, but doesn’t.”
Once all participants have arrived and had an opportunity to scavenge the objects, start the conference with a round of introductions. As well as giving their name, job title, and whatever other standard pieces of info you request, tell each person to introduce the items they’ve found as well, and why it fulfils the criterion you set out before. You’ll get to hear some amazing stories that will provide a far better understanding of each participant’s character than the standard boring virtual event entertainment options!
